Bleeding the Fuel System

Simms pump

Air can enter the fuel system if any part is dismantled, if the fuel tank is allowed to become empty, or through a leak in the system. This may result in failure to start or erratic running of the engine. To rectify, bleed the system as follows:

*a.    Slacken the banjo bolt (2) in the filter head, operate the fuel lift pump priming lever, and when the fuel issuing from the bleed point is free from air bubbles tighten the banjo bolt.

b.    Slacken the air vent plugs (3) in the fuel injection pump body. Operate the lift pump priming lever until air-free fuel issues from the vent plugs, then tighten the vent plugs.

c.    Slacken the union nut at the injector end of one fuel delivery pipe. Operate the starter motor, or run the engine, and as soon as the fuel issuing from the union is free from air bubbles re-tighten the union nut. Repeat this procedure for the remaining fuel delivery pipes.

*After renewing the fuel filter element, it will only be necessary to bleed the fuel filter as described in (a), provided that the engine has not been cranked while the filter is dismantled.

CAV D.P.A pump

Air can enter the fuel system if any part is dismantled, if the fuel tank is allowed to become empty, or through a leak in the system. This may result in failure to start or erratic running of the engine. To rectify, bleed the system as follows:

*a.    Slacken the banjo bolt (1) on the filter head, operate the fuel lift pump priming lever (2), and when the fuel issuing from the bleed point is free from air bubbles tighten the banjo bolt.

b.    Slacken the vent screw (3) on the injection pump governor and the vent screw (4) on the injection pump hydraulic head. Operate the lift pump priming lever and when air-free fuel flows from both vent screws, tighten the hydraulic head vent screw (4) followed by the governor vent screws (3).

c.    Start the engine and allow it to run until it is firing on all cylinders.

*After renewing the fuel filter element, it will only be necessary to bleed the fuel filter as described in (a), provided that the engine has not been cranked while the filter is dismantled.
